8  Purpose

Here is a scene I’ve watched more than once. A team comes from abroad to study the plants of a country not their own, works alongside local botanists who know the ground, collects, and goes home. The specimens get pressed and named, the paper gets written. And the country whose plants they were is left waiting for the labels, the finished record of what was found on its own soil, which comes late, or in pieces, or never.

There’s a word for the shape of this, and it’s colonial. The plants and the knowledge flow out, and the finished record flows back slowly if at all. I don’t think it’s usually malice. It’s the same friction this whole book has been about. Finishing labels at home is dull, slow work, and it loses to the next grant and the next season, and when it loses here the one left short is the host, the people who should hold a complete record of their own flora and don’t.

What should happen is simple to say. When the work is joint, a complete copy of it should stay where it was done: the data, and a set of labeled voucher specimens, curation-ready, in a local herbarium, before anyone flies home. That has always been the right standard. The thing that made it hard was, of all things, the labels. You can’t leave curation-ready vouchers without labels, and labels meant the same transcribe-it-later that gets lost everywhere else. The barrier to doing right by a host country was a clerical chore.

Two things have changed, and together they take the barrier away. The first is that the tools are no longer the visitor’s private advantage. The old kit was expensive, the altimeter and the rest, and the visiting team had it and the local team often did not. Now the instrument is a phone, and everyone has a phone. The capture technology is the same in every hand.

The second is that the information is no longer gated by who can pay for it. Everything this system derives comes from open data: the public elevation and geology and soil, the shared Darwin Core record, none of it behind a paywall or a metered key. So the local team doesn’t just have the same camera. It has the same metadata, the same derived context, the same everything. Our stubborn refusal to lean on a paid map service, which looked like a technical preference earlier in the book, was this all along.

With those two levelers in place, the architecture does the rest on its own. The label and the log are made on site, from the photograph, before anyone leaves, so the complete, curation-ready record stays in the host herbarium by default, not by anyone’s good intentions. The friction that used to excuse “I’ll send it later” is gone, and the excuse with it. And because a community can discover the decks its own flora needs from its own record, it doesn’t have to wait for anyone abroad to tell it what is worth writing down. What’s shared isn’t only the tools. It’s the expertise.

I’ll be honest about where this came from. Seeing that mismatch, year after year, was the original idea for the project, before any of the pieces existed. I didn’t set out to build a system of QR cards. I set out to level a playing field I’d watched tilt the wrong way for a long time, and the cards and the derive engine turned out to be how.

A record isn’t finished when the plant is collected, or even when it’s named. It’s finished when everyone with a right to it can hold it. For a host country and its own botanists, that last step has too often been the missing one, and it is the step this system puts back. If it works, it is a small repayment on a large debt, to the collaborators who once showed me their country’s plants. The rest of this book is about making it real.
